John Holland (bishop)
John Tristram Holland (31 January 1912 – 9 October 1990) was an Anglican bishop in New Zealand in the 20th century.〔(University of Auckland website. )〕〔(Ohinemuri Regional History website. )〕
Holland was born into an ecclesiastical family, his father being the Rt Revd Herbert St Barbe Holland who was the Bishop of Wellington and then the Dean of Norwich. He was and educated at Durham School and University College, Oxford.〔“Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 978-0-19-954087-7〕 Ordained in 1936,〔Crockford's Clerical Directory1940-41 Oxford, OUP,1941〕 he was a curate at St Peter’s Huddersfield.〔(Photo of church )〕 He then held incumbencies at Featherston,〔The Times, Tuesday, Oct 10, 1939; pg. 1; Issue 48432; col A〕 Upper Riccarton and New Plymouth before being appointed the Bishop of Waikato in 1951, a position he held for 18 years. In 1969 he was translated to the Diocese of Polynesia.〔(National Church Institutions Database of Manuscripts and Archives )〕 He retired in 1975, and was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1975 Birthday Honours.
